Privacy Policy
PIN IT! is a geography trivia game. We built it to be fun and private. This page explains, in plain language, what data the app touches and why.
THE SHORT VERSION
We don't collect personal information about you. There are no third-party analytics, no ad networks, no trackers. Your profile and stats live on your device. When you play multiplayer, submit a Daily Challenge score or appear on the leaderboards, we send only your display name (either one you chose or a random one the website gave you), chosen flag emoji, your scores and your total points to our server, never anything that could identify you. Your device also gets a random ID and a short friend code so the leaderboards know which score is yours. Neither is connected to your real identity. On the website we also count visits, without cookies and without storing your IP address, see Website visit statistics below. The website also loads a few files from other companies, such as its fonts and a small badge from Alldle, see Alldle badge and Files from other services below. If you turn on the website's daily reminder, we also store what is needed to send it, see Push notifications below.
WHAT WE STORE ON YOUR DEVICE
The app saves the following locally in your phone's app storage:
- The display name and flag emoji you picked
- Your game stats (games played, best distance, streaks, achievements)
- Your custom questions if you created any
- Your settings (notifications, Gold Mode, Drink Mode confirmation)
- Whether you unlocked the Premium in-app purchase
- A local cache of the question bank
Uninstalling the app removes all of this. We never see it, apart from the total points the app sends for the leaderboards, see below.
WHAT WE STORE ON OUR SERVER
Our server (hosted on Railway in the EU) receives and stores the following:
- Daily Challenge leaderboard: your display name, flag emoji, and score. On the website, your score goes on the board automatically when you finish. The board refreshes at 9:00 AM Amsterdam time. Your score, filed under the random ID your device generated, is kept for 90 days, so the app can still tell you where you finished and award the placement points even if you do not open it for a while. It is deleted after that.
- Multiplayer rooms: your display name and flag emoji are held in memory only for the duration of the game and discarded when the room closes. The one exception is a moderation report, see below.
- Friends: a random ID for your device, your friend code, your display name and flag, and the list of people you have added. See Friends below.
- Points leaderboards (This month and All time): your display name, flag emoji and the total points on your statistics tab, filed under your device's random ID, together with when you last changed your name, which you can do once a week. The app sends your total after games and when it opens, and we check it against the games and placements we have seen. This is kept until you ask us to remove it. Players without a name are not shown. On the website, a player who hasn't typed a name gets a random one, like hamsterlover456, when they finish a game, and appears on the boards under it until they change it. If we replace a name that breaks our rules, we keep the old one with your record so your device can't put it back.
- Website daily reminder: only if you turn it on, see Push notifications below.
- Gameplay records: when you finish a game we store which questions you were shown, how far your guesses landed from the answers, your score, and the random ID your device generated. We use this to find questions that are pinned in the wrong place, and to count how many people come back. The record itself holds no name or flag. We also use the scores in it to check the total points your device reports, and it is deleted after 90 days.
- Daily Challenge totals: we keep a count of how many people finished each day's challenge, and the average and best score for that day. These are numbers only, with no names, flags, device IDs or individual scores attached, so they are kept once the personal details above are deleted.
Where this policy mentions your flag, that can also be a pin colour you chose, or one the game picked for you.
We never store your IP address, your device's advertising or hardware identifiers, or your contacts. We do not build user profiles across sessions. The one place we hold an email address is the launch mailing list below, and only if you typed it in yourself.
LAUNCH MAILING LIST
The website has a box where you can leave your email address to be told when the app launches. It is entirely optional and nothing else on the site or in the game asks for it.
- What we store: the address you typed, the moment you signed up, the exact wording you agreed to, and where you came from, for example which link brought you to the site. We do not store your IP address.
- What we send: one email, on the day the app launches. Nothing else. No newsletter, no offers, no reminders.
- Who else sees it: nobody. We do not sell, rent or share the list. When we send the launch email we will use an email delivery service to do it, and it will only ever receive the addresses needed to send that one message.
- Leaving: go to playpinit.com/unsubscribe and enter your address, or use the unsubscribe link in the email. It takes effect immediately.
- How long we keep it: until you unsubscribe, or until the launch email has been sent and the list is no longer needed.
Your consent is the legal basis for this, and you can withdraw it at any time using the link above.
WEBSITE VISIT STATISTICS
To see how many people visit playpinit.com and which of our buttons they use, such as the App Store badge, our own server counts visits. Nothing is sent to anyone else. For each visit we record:
- the page and the date, and which of these buttons was pressed, if any
- the website or app that linked to us, and the tag in the link if it has one (for example ?ref=tiktok)
- whether you are on a phone, tablet or computer, its operating system and browser, and your browser's language setting
- your country, which Cloudflare, the network that delivers our website, works out from your connection
We do not use cookies for this and store nothing on your device, which is why the site has no cookie banner. We do not store your IP address. It is used once, together with your browser details and a secret that changes every day, to make a daily code, so that reloading a page does not count you twice. The secret is deleted the next day, after which the code cannot be traced back to you, and codes from different days cannot be linked to each other. We only look at totals, and these records are kept for 90 days.
Our legitimate interest in knowing how the website is used is the legal basis for this.
ALLDLE BADGE
The home page and the browser game on playpinit.com show a small "Play on Alldle" badge, to promote the game on Alldle (alldle.net), a website that lists daily games. The badge image loads from Alldle's server. So when you open those pages, your browser connects to Alldle, which can see your IP address and browser details the way any website you connect to can, and may count how often the badge is shown.
The badge sends Alldle nothing else: not your name, scores or device ID, and the image does not set a cookie. The iPhone app does not show the badge. If you click the badge or play PIN IT! on Alldle's website, Alldle's own privacy policy applies there.
When you play the Daily Challenge inside Alldle's website, the game also loads a small script from Alldle, so a finished round can count in your routine and streak there. It sends Alldle that you started and finished, your score, the time you took, the date, your screen width and a random ID the script keeps in your browser. If you are signed in to Alldle, it is linked to your Alldle account. We do not give Alldle your PIN IT! name, flag or device ID. None of this happens on playpinit.com, on other websites or in the iPhone app.
Our legitimate interest in promoting the game is the legal basis for this.
FILES FROM OTHER SERVICES
Like many websites, playpinit.com and its browser game load a few files from other services instead of our own server. When your browser fetches them, that service can see your IP address and browser details the way any website you connect to can. We do not send them your name, scores, device ID or anything else, and these files do not set cookies.
- Google Fonts (Google): the fonts used on our web pages.
- Apple: the "Download on the App Store" badge.
- unpkg.com: the code that draws the map in the browser game.
Our legitimate interest in running the website and browser game reliably is the legal basis for this.
MODERATION AND REPORTS
Custom questions you write and use in a multiplayer room are sent to every player in that room. Before you can share them for the first time, the app asks you to agree to this.
If a player in your room submits a report, we store the following as a moderation record:
- the display names of the player who reported and the player reported
- the room code, the number of players, and the stated reason
- the text of any custom questions used in that game
We keep these records so we can review reports and act on them, which app store rules require us to be able to do. Unlike ordinary gameplay data, moderation records are not automatically deleted after 90 days. We also log when a question is automatically blocked by our content filter, or when a host removes a player from a room.
If you would like a moderation record concerning you removed, email support@playpinit.com.
FRIENDS
The friends leaderboard has no accounts. Once you have a display name, your device creates a random ID for itself and our server gives you a short friend code. From then on we store that ID and code, your display name and flag so friends can see who you are, the list of people you have added, and your Daily Challenge score for today so it can appear on their board.
Adding someone is one-way. It shows them your name, flag and today's score, and nothing else. You can remove a friend at any time.
The ID lives on your device. If you delete the app, or clear your browser data on the web, it is gone and your friends list goes with it. We cannot restore it, because there is no account behind it. That is the trade for not asking you to sign up.
Your friend record and leaderboard entry stay on our server until you ask us to remove them. Email support@playpinit.com and we will delete them, along with any friend entries pointing at you.
WHAT WE DO NOT DO
- We do not use third-party analytics (no Google Analytics, no Firebase, no Mixpanel).
- We do not show advertising.
- We do not sell or rent your data to anyone. We share data with RevenueCat, only to check purchases, see In-App Purchases below. Alldle receives your connection details when your browser loads its badge on our website, and your Daily Challenge result when you play inside Alldle's website, see Alldle badge above. So do the services behind our website's fonts, App Store badge and map code, see Files from other services above. If you turn on the website's daily reminder, it travels through your browser maker's notification service, see Push notifications below.
- We do not track you across other apps or websites.
IN-APP PURCHASES
The optional Premium unlock is processed by Apple's App Store. We never see your card details or Apple ID, Apple handles the payment itself.
We use a service called RevenueCat to check that a purchase is genuine and to remember that you own it, including when you reinstall the app. RevenueCat receives the purchase receipt from Apple, an anonymous ID for your device, and the country of your App Store account. It never receives your name, your email address, or any payment details. You can read how they handle data at revenuecat.com/privacy.
PUSH NOTIFICATIONS
The app can send a local reminder each morning about the Daily Challenge. This runs entirely on your device. You can turn it off at any time in Settings, or through your phone's system notification settings.
On the website, you can ask for a daily reminder with the bell on the game's home screen. It is off unless you turn it on, and your browser asks for your permission first. If you turn it on, we store the time you picked, your time zone, your device's random ID (so we can skip the reminder when you have already played that day's Daily Challenge), and the delivery address and keys your browser gives us for notifications.
The reminder travels through the notification service of your browser's maker: Google for Chrome, Mozilla for Firefox, Apple for Safari and Microsoft for Edge. That service can see the address and when a message arrives, but the message itself is encrypted.
You can turn the reminder off with the same bell or in your browser's settings. We delete everything above when you turn it off with the bell, or when your browser's notification service tells us the address no longer works. Your consent is the legal basis for this.
CHILDREN'S PRIVACY
PIN IT! is rated 13+ on the App Store. Drink Mode is protected by an in-app age gate that requires confirmation that the user is 18 or older. We do not knowingly collect any personal data from anyone.
CHANGES TO THIS POLICY
If we change how the app or server handles data, we'll update this page and adjust the "Last updated" date at the top. Meaningful changes will also be announced in the app.
